Broward County's Fire-Rescue team, on the way to Imperial Point Medical Center. A sudden gall bladder attack on an otherwise uneventful Shabbat afternoon had me on the short route to emergency surgery and a few days in the hospital, followed by additional time at home recuperating.
We made no public announcements, but news has a tendency to travel anyway. I am so grateful to all those who, having learned of the situation, called and wrote to extend get well wishes, offered prayers and expressed generosity to the Temple for my recovery, and offered help to Marlyn in dealing with a challenging and impatient patient. Fortunately, I am told, the gall bladder is not an essential piece of equipment, and my recovery (kein ein hora) has been uneventful. That is due in no small part to the kindness of so many. Among them, of course, I include Marlyn, the paramedics who responded to our call, and the doctors, nurses, technicians and other hospital personnel who cared for me. A special word of thanks to Dr. Sheldon Warman, an extraordinary diagnostician and a comforting friend.
Out of every challenge comes insight. Carey Fischer will, I hope, forgive me for citing his words: "The next time someone tells you you have unmitigated gall, you can tell them your gall has been mitigated."
Thanks again, and have a happy and healthy remainder of the summer.
